Domain Name Selection Fatal Errors
Should your domain name be singular or plural? Does it matter? Yes, very much so. Here is a perfect real life example:
While traveling very recently with a friend, we stopped at his brothers house who markets screen rooms thru www.ScreenRoomsPlus.com. It was an aged domain with good Google placement. Well, they let the domain expire unwittingly and of course it was snatched up by an enterprizing fellow who offered it back to them at a high price. Rather than pay the ransom, the thought they would be smart and go around the ransom by purchasing www.screenroomsplusco.com . I guess the co stood for company. How easy was that domain to remember?
Well here comes a little simple SEO knowledge that can avoid the fatal error of missing traffic that could have been theirs for free. As a seller your thinking, ” I sell screen rooms” so lets get “screen rooms something.com” as a domain name. But wait a second, the customer is search for what? Is it, “I want a screen room” or is it, “I want a screen rooms”.
To prove my point, here are the statistics straight from Google:
Screen Room searches: monthly 110,000 April
Screen Rooms searches: monthly 27,100 April
So now the solution:
Www.ScreenRoomPlus.com was available as well as
Now they have a shorter domain name than the old one or the new one they thought up and a domain with the keyword in it which is a big plus and can achieve natural placement for 110,000 searches rather than 27,000 searches. Remember Google treats singular and plural words differently.
So I guess a little learning can go a long way.
